The benefits of sober living


You don’t necessarily have to feel bad in order to feel better. Have you ever wondered what life will be like when you’re sober for a few weeks at a time, let alone months or years? Here’s a reminder of why being sober is better.


First off, your memory will improve so much that it will surprise you, have you noticed the decline in short-term memory? Do you catch yourself looking for your keys multiple times a day? Or do you know the feeling of not knowing how you got home last night and the repercussions that come with that? Have you met someone and forgot their name or the things they just told you?


Using substances over prolonged periods of time can affect not only your short-term memory but also your cognitive abilities. The brain changes and adapts to our habits, this is called neuroplasticity, these changes don’t happen from one moment to another but they happen over time, and its probably been a while since your mind was 100% clear to remember what it felt like before. This neuroplasticity doesn’t mean the brain structure will change forever. Getting into new hobbies, learning new things and quitting old bad habits will also bring positive changes to your brain and your life in general.

You are probably struggling to imagine what life will be like without substances, you probably think that living sober is boring and awkward, but you have to give it a try to realize how amazing it is to come out of the addictions you’ve built up over time and reap the benefits of being and living sober.


The improvement in memory and cognitive abilities is amazing as it is, but you will notice how your relationships will also start improving. Once you’re sober you will have so much more time to spend with friends and loved ones. You will notice things that you probably didn’t notice before, little details, and you will naturally be more interested in forming and maintaining healthier relationships.


If you are a parent this is one of the biggest areas where your life will be positively affected, and your kids and spouse will notice it too. You will be more more present, patient and interested in your loved ones. This will bring a sense of well-being into your life and you will definitely become a better and happier person, which in turn will bring nurturing and fulfilling relationships into your life.


You will also become a better, more reliable, and honest friend. You will find new interest and meet new people. You will also have more money and time to spend it building yourself and becoming better at the things you enjoy doing the most. Overall, you will start building a new life, whether it means getting into the gym and working on a healthier self, or working on yourself and focusing on things you love and start your own business to help others with your new acquired skill sets.


The benefits of living sober are more than you realize right now, you will look back at the time you spent consuming drugs and alcohol and see for yourself that now you have more of it to do different things like visiting family, friends, learning something new, and focusing on yourself.
